Unit description Unit description

This unit introduces students to the entrepreneurial process of generating ideas, identifying opportunities and developing these opportunities. Students will study business concepts and processes that support the successful launch and operation of entrepreneurial ventures. The unit is taught through experiential learning where students acquire the knowledge to launch new business ventures. Students will learn how to investigate market dynamics and customer needs to generate innovative ideas. Students will bring together the knowledge acquired across different disciplines, including sustainable thinking, as they provide recommendations to launch or re-launch a sustainable new business venture.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Describe and explain key entrepreneurship concepts, theories and principles, including those that reflect sustainable value for business and society.
  • ULO2: Analyse the strategies of an existing business venture and develop recommendations that integrate the key entrepreneurship theories and concepts.
  • ULO3: Develop a novel business idea to solve a real-world problem and create a coherent, feasible and sustainable new venture plan.

General Assessment Information

Late Submission Penalties

If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days. Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

Example 1 (out of 100):

If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

Example 2 (out of 30):

If you score 27/30 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

Extensions

Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to critically analyse a competitor’s product offering and sustainability practices to inform strategic decision-making for your group's proposed new venture.

You will individually evaluate a selected competitor’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), their triple bottom line (TBL) performance and their product features, compare those to your group’s business idea, and propose two improvements your group may adopt- one relating to product features, and one relating to triple bottom line (TBL) dimension.

Individual assessment


On successful completion you will be able to:

Professional practice: Pitch presentation

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to communicate entrepreneurial ideas clearly and persuasively by presenting a component of the collaboratively developed business venture.

You will deliver an individual pitch presenting a specific section of your group’s proposed new venture, demonstrating your understanding of the business idea, its feasibility, and its potential value.

Deliverable(s): Presentation (3 min) followed by Q&A with accompanying slides.

Individual assessment


On successful completion you will be able to:

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to collaboratively design and evaluate a new business idea that addresses a real-world problem using entrepreneurial thinking and business planning tools.

You will work in a group to create a detailed business plan that outlines the proposed venture, evaluates its feasibility, analyses the competitive and industry landscape, and demonstrates financial and strategic viability.
