Unit description Unit description

This unit provides an introduction to human resource management (HRM) in Australia. Content examined includes key policies and practices and contemporary environmental influences on HR strategy formation. Major topic areas are: human resource planning and staffing; employee training and development; performance appraisal; managing a workforce; and workplace health and safety. On completion of this unit students will be able to demonstrate the links between the different areas of HRM and the contribution of HRM in businesses.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify and investigate key concepts and theories in Human Resource Management.
  • ULO2: Explain and analyse the connection between Human Resource Management and organisational processes, plans and policies which deliver sustainable organisations.
  • ULO3: Develop and apply effective critical thinking and argument-making skills, both written and verbal.

General Assessment Information

Late Submission Penalties

If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days. Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0.

Example 1 (out of 100):

If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100.

Example 2 (out of 30):

If you score 27/30 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30.

Extensions

Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

You will summarise and evaluate a selection of scholarly sources, demonstrating your ability to extract key ideas, assess their quality and relevance, and communicate your analysis in a clear and coherent written format.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to research, interpret, and communicate Human Resource Management concepts in ways that are accessible and relevant to workplace stakeholders.
 
You will create an infographic that translates HRM theory and evidence into clear, visually engaging insights, similar to how HR professionals communicate policies, initiatives, and workforce information to managers and employees. You will present and explain your infographic, demonstrating your ability to synthesise HRM knowledge, justify key messages, and communicate them effectively.

The purpose of this assessment is to help you recognise how everyday learning behaviours reflect key Human Resource Management capabilities, such as professional responsibility, participation, and commitment to ongoing development.
 
You will reflect on your engagement and contributions in tutorials, considering how these behaviours relate to expectations of employees and HR practitioners in contemporary organisations. You will also articulate how you plan to develop these capabilities as you progress through your studies and future work. Your reflection will be supported by artefacts from your learning activities in this unit.
