Unit description
This PACE unit will provide students with practical, real-world experiences by applying their disciplinary knowledge of history and heritage within community or professional settings. These units are designed to enhance employability and citizenship skills. Students participating in the unit will be divided into streams according to their major. PACE units foster the development of skills relevant to the workplace, including communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking. PACE provides opportunities to explore potential career paths and build professional networks. Students will be required to undertake a placement either in the cultural heritage or public history sectors (e.g., museums, galleries, archives, libraries, heritage consultancies, etc), in order to learn directly from professional practitioners and to practice their skills in a real-world environment. Visit Employability Connect for important information on this unit including required preparation and closing dates for PACE activities. |
Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
10 weekly written journal entries - due 11.55pm Sunday, Weeks 2-11.
Final Submission Due: Sunday 11.55pm, Week 11, 25 October 2026
Weight: 50%
Each week (Weeks 2-11) you need to reflect on your learning in the unit and comment on your internship experience. In Week 11 you will upload a compilation of your journal entries for marking as one piece of work. You can feel free to edit the entries that you include in your final submission in Week 11 - they do not have to be the exact same as the ones you've written in that week.
Due: Sunday 11.55pm, Week 13, 8 November 2026
Weight: 50%
Word Length: Negotiable but ca. 2000 words depending on format
This assessment involves the production of a creative output or industry-related report (e.g., newspaper story, written report, website, etc) that communicates the PACE project and its value.
IMPORTANT PENALTIES TO BE APPLIED
Rubrics and other guidance for the Assessments will be posted on our iLearn site and discussed in class. To complete the unit successfully you will need a minimum mark of 50% overall, and you will have to attempt all the assessments. F / FA: 0-49% P: 50-64% CR: 65-74% D: 75-84% HD: 85-100%
LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSESSMENT TASKS Please always let one of us know ahead of time if you are having difficulty completing an assessment or if you will not be able to attend class or complete the online tutorial task. It's just good for us to know what is going on with you -- it is not necessary to give specifics of your situation -- but it helps to hear from you, partly because Special Considerations get be delayed in busy times.
Most importantly though, please make sure to apply for a Special Consideration if you are not able to submit a task on time. That will help us to help you. I highly recommend that you become familiar with the procedure before you are in the position of having to use it - so that it does not become another challenging hurdle when you are already experiencing difficulties.
Here is the link to the webpage that will talk you through the requirements and process of Special Considerations.
LATE ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION PENALTY: Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.
IMPORTANT NOTE ON MARKS Grading decisions for each assessment task will be moderated against the set criteria and standards before task results are released.
