Unit description Unit description

This unit introduces experimental design and survey design. These are important methods for collecting data. Experimental design looks at the construction of basic designs and the analysis of such designs. Survey design covers different sampling strategies, the design of sample surveys, data collection methods, and the statistical analysis of data collected from surveys. The emphasis is on practical applications using R, with real-world examples.

Learning in this unit enhances student understanding of global challenges identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Apply appropriate statistical technique(s) to estimate population parameters based on commonly used sampling methods.
  • ULO2: Identify potential issues for survey designs and evaluate the ethical relevance and implications in the design of a questionnaire and its questions.
  • ULO3: Apply basic knowledge to design questionnaires and construct questions.
  • ULO4: Identify suitable experimental designs to solve a variety of problems.
  • ULO5: Identify appropriate statistical method(s) and use relevant software for the analysis of data from basic experimental and survey designs. 
  • ULO6: Effectively communication experimental designs and survey procedures, and their results and conclusions to diverse audiences. 
  • ULO7: Perform effectively as an individual and as part of a team, and practice self-reflection.

General Assessment Information

Requirements to Pass this Unit

To pass this unit, you must:

  • Achieve a total mark equal to or greater than 50%.

Assessment Release

  • Group Project: Specifications to be released no later than 14th August.
  • Assignment: To be released no later than 9th October.

Hurdle Assessments

There is no Hurdle Assessment in this unit.

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark of the task) will be applied for each day a written report or presentation assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. The submission time for all uploaded assessments is 11:55 pm. A 1-hour grace period will be provided to students who experience technical concerns. For any late submission of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, please apply for Special Consideration. For example, if the assignment is worth 8 marks (of the entire unit) and your submission is late by 19 hours (or 23 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds), 0.4 marks (5% of 8 marks) will be deducted. If your submission is late by 24 hours (or 47 hours 59 minutes 59 seconds), 0.8 marks (10% of 8 marks) will be deducted, and so on.

Assessments where Late Submissions will be accepted:

  • Group Project – YES, Standard Late Penalty applies;
  • Assignment – YES, Standard Late Penalty applies;
  • Final Examination – NO, unless Special Consideration is granted.

Special Consideration

The Special Consideration Policy aims to support students who have been impacted by short-term circumstances or events that are serious, unavoidable, and significantly disruptive, and which may affect their performance in assessment. Group Project

You will practise a core workplace research workflow by designing and delivering a small-scale survey study and using evidence to inform decisions for real audiences. You will collaborate in a team to design and run a survey, analyse the resulting dataset, and produce a reproducible report, a non-specialist presentation, and a brief reflection. You will develop skills in survey design, data management and analysis, reproducible communication, teamwork, and audience-focused reporting.

Changes from Previous Offering

The previous 2-hour lecture has been replaced with pre-recorded lecture videos and a 1-hour workshop. The videos introduce the core statistical concepts, and you are expected to review them before class. The workshop will focus on worked examples, problem-solving, and questions to help you apply the material and prepare for the assessments.

To enable students more time to focus on collaborative learning, understanding, and reflecting on the content of our unit, we have revised the assessment structure as follows. There are three assessments: a group project, an assignment, and a final exam. Although no marks are associated with attendance, all activities provide you with key content designed to help you understand the content and complete the assessments.
