This unit provides students with opportunities to practice translation of the most up-to-date texts, especially catering for student needs regarding areas on-demand in translation markets.

Delivery and Resources

Each language group has one 3-hour face-to-face class every week, focuses on translation from English into LOTE and from LOTE into English. Please refer to the timetable provided by the T&I office for specific class times and classrooms.

This unit uses authentic texts that professional translators deal with in the real translation market such as IT white papers, financial reports, medical journals, and tourist brochures, to give just a few examples. The selection of texts may be different depending on the demands of individual translation markets. It is recommended that students translate texts that are equivalent to 30,000 words approximately in total this semester.

This unit also provides opportunities for students to develop generic skills that are required of professional translators. Such opportunities may be provided in the form of project-based learning, task-based learning, or problem-based learning.

It is expected that students in this unit will actively participate in various activities designed in this unit and develop their own professional tools.

In order to gain the most benefit from the unit, students need the following hardware & software:

·            a PC or Mac computer with internet access

·            MS Word

·            a PDF reader (for pdf files)
