Unit description
This unit introduces students to Middle Egyptian, the classical language of Ancient Egypt. This was the language of the Middle Kingdom and the early New Kingdom but it remained in use in religious and literary texts as long as the Egyptian civilisation survived. The understanding of Middle Egyptian is essential to earlier and later stages of this language.

The final test will be an unseen text and you will be asked to transliterate and translate a short passage using a dictionary and grammar book and show knowledge of the grammar of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

Your lecturer/tutor will record your attendance each week and look for evidence that you have completed the set tasks for the week; that you are able to express the concepts from these tasks in verbal form and that you are willing to work with and respond to the views of your tutor and other students in verbal form. Weekly exercises will be from the textbook.
Attendance of all lectures is compulsory. Students absent due to illness or other valid reasons should immediately notify the course convenor or the Department Administrator (see contacts above). If you miss more than four lectures/tutorials without evidence of an unforeseen and serious disruption (e.g. illness, supported by a medical certificate) you will be excluded from the unit.

You will be asked to transliterate and translate a short passage of text using a dictionary and show knowledge of the grammar and vocabulary of Egyptian hieroglyphs. The best 3 of 4 marks will count towards your final grade.

PC and Internet access are required for external students and those who wish to access iLearn. Basic computer skills (e.g., internetbrowsing) and skills in word processing are also a requirement.

The unit will be based on the following text book, which can be purchased via the Australian Centre for Egyptology (W6A 531, +61 (0)2 9850 8848 or egypt@mq.edu.au) or the David Brown bookshop (http://www.oxbowbooks.com/bookinfo.cfm/ID/22478//Location/DBBC) and other such avenues. Excerpts from the textbook are at the back of this unit guide and are also on the unit's website.
- B.G. Ockinga, A Concise Grammar of Middle Egyptian, (Revised Edition 2005, Mainz am Rhein).
It is recommended that you gain access to the following dictionary for assistance with translation:
- R.O. Faulkner, A Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian, (Oxford, 1976).
To complete the unit satisfactorily, you will need to achieve an overall mark worth 50% or above.
If you anticipate any difficulty in attending class for a scheduled test it is important that you contact us as early as possible. Please avoid asking for extensions as missing deadlines complicates the work of markers and puts you behind.
If you have to ask for an extension or the opportunity to re-schedule the date of a test please request it before the deadline, and only request the extension if you face serious crises that can be documented in some way (e.g. with a medical certificate). ‘Getting behind with your work’ or 'I ran out of time’ are not excuses. If you miss a class test due to illness or a serious crisis that can be documented, you can re-schedule and sit the test at a later time. Please see us as soon as possible to organise a time and place to sit a supplementary test.
Sitting a supplementary test without valid documentation will result in a penalty of 2% of the test mark per day, including weekends.
