Unit description Unit description
Leading others begins with building effective relationships. This unit provides students with the opportunity to develop skills to manage teams and build strong relationships with others. Through a series of workshops, students will learn practical skills to connect with people more successfully. The use of influence and persuasion will be compared and students will learn skills to work more collaboratively with different types of people. The unit aims to expand students’ skills and knowledge to improve their effectiveness as leaders. Outcomes from this unit will help students understand relationships better and to develop leadership behaviour capabilities. This unit employs block teaching.

General Assessment Information

Students will need to note the different submission requirements for each assessment task as highlighted within the Assessment Tasks Section.

It is also important to note the need to apply for a Disruptions to Study, as no extensions will be granted in regards to a late submission of assessment task. This is highlighted within the Assessment Task Section for each individual assessment

Essay Topic Area:  Leading teams  and the impact on organisational performance.

A turnitin report and assessment marking sheet will be attached to each essay

Self Reflective Journal

Due: July 20 and August 3 2015
Weighting: 30%

Students will be required to submit two personal journal entries of approx. 500 - 750 words each 

These will be on various self selected topics based on two chapters from Alex Malley's Book "The Naked CEO"

Submit to BESS by 5.00pm on July 20 and 5.00pm on August 3. (unless otherwise negotiated with Unit Convenor)

 No extension will be granted. Students who do NOT submit the assessment, will be awarded a mark of 0 for the assessment task, except for cases in which an application for Disruption to Studies application  has been lodged and approved.

Presentation & Paper

Weighting: 30%
Groupwork/Individual:

Students will be placed in Groups of 5, during the block teaching week.

Students will select a leading organisation and then research the leaders within that organisation. 

The presentation will focus on the organisation as a leader and individuals within the organisation. (20 minutes in total) and all students presenting.

Students will then submit a 1500 word Group Report, analysing  the leadership and the chosen organisation's success 

This assessment will be Peer assessed.

Submission:

Presentation in class on Monday 10 or Tuesday 11 August 2015 (unless otherwise negotiated with Unit Convenor)

Report will be submitted to BESS by 5.00pm on Monday 24 August 2015. (unless otherwise negotiated with Unit Convenor)

Extension:

Delivery and Resources

Classes

This unit is comprised of :

  • A teaching block of five (5) days during Winter Vacation break ( Monday (6 July) to Friday (10 July) 10.00am - 6.00pm 
  • Two (2) x three (3) hour classes in Week 3 of Second Semester (Monday 10 August and Tuesday 11 August {6.00pm - 9.00pm})

Attendance will be taken in the class. Attendance at class will allow the student to gain the maximum benefit, as will be the expected interaction within the class environment

Note:

It is imperative that students keep abreast of current developments both in Australia and abroad via the public and popular media in respect to leadership. At the beginning of each lecture, students will be asked to participate in a discussion of the preceding week’s newsworthy items.

Students are required to learn how to use power point, word processing and iLearn. Access to a personal computer or similar device in order to access Ilearn

UNIT SCHEDULE:

Due to the nature of the block teaching mode, the schedule will be flexible throughout the block.

As a guide:

Lectures – The role of lectures is to build on the relevant core readings to set out main ideas, theories and conceptual frameworks. Lectures are assumed to last 2 hours.

 

Tutorials – The tutorials provide an interactive environment to allow the development of knowledge and practice of skills through exercises and scenarios. Tutorials are assumed to last 1 hour.
