Unit description Unit description
Leadership begins with knowing who you are. In this unit, students will be introduced to tools for self-reflection. Students will examine methods, skills, and strategies that will help them achieve career objectives. This unit also examines leadership theories, traits and behaviours and will provide students with discipline specific knowledge and skills, as well as the opportunity to conduct a comprehensive self-analysis. Outcomes from this unit will help students understand themselves and the foundations of leadership.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

General Assessment Information

Students will need to note the different submission requirements for each assessment task as highlighted within the Assessment Tasks Section.

It is also important to note the need to apply for a Disruptions to Study, as no extensions will be granted in regards to a late submission of assessment task. This is highlighted within the Assessment Task Section for each individual assessment

Leadership Essay

Due: Week 7 Friday 24 April 2015

Essay on leadership types and behaviour and the impact on organisational performance.

In Class to Lecturer in week 7, -  24 April 2015.

A turnitin report and assessment marking sheet will be attached to each essay

Extension:

No extension will be granted. Students who do NOT submit the assessment, will be awarded a mark of 0 for the assessment task, except for cases in which an application for Disruption to Studies application  has been lodged and approved.

Self Reflective Journal

Due: Commencing Week 2 - Week 10
Weighting: 20%

Students will be required to submit five personal journal entries of approx. 250 words on designated weeks throughout the semester.

These will be on various selected topics including: self awareness; leadership and management; leadership traits; personal change; goal setting; time management  and decision making.

Oral Debrief Presentations

Due: Commencing Week 4 in tutorials
Weighting: 15%

Students will be given a topic area and they will need to source an academic reading to present to the tutorial. This will cover a brief analysis of the article and the contemporary thoughts on that area.  (not a summarised version). The presentation will be of 10 minutes duration.

Students will send the Lecturer a reference to the article they have selected to present on the day prior to the Lecture (Thursday by 3pm) and the reading will be available to the rest of the unit cohort on the Ilearn website

 

Submission:

In tutorials commencing Week 4

Extension:

Students who do NOT present in their designated week, will only be able to present again at the discretion of the Lecturer.

Delivery and Resources

Classes

This unit is comprised of :

  • 12 x 2 hour lectures ( Week 6 is a Public Holiday - Good Friday)
  • 12  x 1 hour tutorials in weeks 1 - 13

Attendance will be taken in the class. Attendance at class will allow the student to gain the maximum benefit, as will be the expected interaction within the class environment

It is imperative that students keep abreast of current developments both in Australia and abroad via the public and popular media in respect to leadership. At the beginning of each lecture, students will be asked to participate in a discussion of the preceding week’s newsworthy items.

UNIT SCHEDULE:

Lectures – The role of lectures is to build on the relevant core readings to set out main ideas, theories and conceptual frameworks. Lectures are assumed to last 2 hours.
