Unit description Unit description
In this unit new theoretical and conceptual knowledge of public history will be practiced and used to produce public history in a variety of forms. Partnerships have been discussed with the City of Sydney History Unit, the Dictionary of Sydney, local historical societies and museums in Sydney as well as elsewhere. The practice of public history outside of the university context will lead to further analysis of the relationship between the academic theory and the increasing practice and popularity of public history.

Review of place of internship (800 words).


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding and experience of the practice and function of public history in a particular context.
  • Students will evaluate the social and political functions of historical knowledge and whether public history democratises historical research and knowledge.

Internship project

Due: Week 12 30th Oct 2017
Weighting: 30%

 Piece of work directed by place of internship (up to 3000 words).


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding and experience of the practice and function of public history in a particular context.
  • Students will explain from personal work place experiences the practice and function of public history.
  • Students will analyse why and how some academic historians engage with certain forms of public history.
  • Students will evaluate the social and political functions of historical knowledge and whether public history democratises historical research and knowledge.

Formative journal

Due: Ongoing
Weighting: 20%

Formative research/practice journal (200 words per week).


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding and experience of the practice and function of public history in a particular context.
  • Students will explain from personal work place experiences the practice and function of public history.
  • Students will analyse why and how some academic historians engage with certain forms of public history.
  • Students will evaluate the social and political functions of historical knowledge and whether public history democratises historical research and knowledge.

Summative essay

Due: Week 13 9th Nov 2017
Weighting: 20%

Summative essay on experience as an intern (up to 1500 words).


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a deep understanding and experience of the practice and function of public history in a particular context.
  • Students will explain from personal work place experiences the practice and function of public history.
  • Students will analyse why and how some academic historians engage with certain forms of public history.

Tutorial participation

Due: Ongoing
Weighting: 20%

Participate in tutorials - face to face and online.

You are expected to attend every seminar in this unit – absences must be documented (for example, with a medical certificate). Your grade is assessed on the basis of your generosity with your knowledge to other students and your willingness to ask relevant questions and to have a go at trying to answer others’ questions. Simply turning up registers no marks at all.

This unit uses iLearn and all unit news will be communicated via I learn. All students are expected to have high speed and reliable access to the internet and a computer. You will also need a headset and a computer with a camera to participate in Webinars.
