Unit description Unit description
This unit includes two modules: an advanced musculoskeletal physiotherapy module and an advanced clinical reasoning module addressing complex patient-centred health care in society. In the musculoskeletal module, students will develop advanced manual therapy skills. In the advanced clinical reasoning module, students will develop skills in the assessment and management planning for patients with multisystem or complex problems. In this unit students will build on and integrate material from their clinical placements, the core areas of musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological physiotherapy as well as foundation sciences and advanced anatomy.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Design, conduct and demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning to interpret and analyse assessment findings and relevant research-evidence for individuals with complex presentations.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning abilities and synthesis of current best-evidence to develop and implement a safe and effective physiotherapy intervention plan for individuals with complex presentations that addresses the individual’s goals.

To pass this unit, students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes and attempt all three of the assessment tasks.

All final grades in the department of Health Professions are determined by a grading committee and are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.

Students will be awarded one of these grades plus a Standardised Numerical Grade (SNG). The SNG is not necessarily a summation of the individual assessment components. The final grade and SNG that are awarded reflect the corresponding grade descriptor in Schedule 1 of the Assessment Policy.

Late Submission of Work

All assignments which are officially received after the due date, and where no extension has been granted by the course convenor or tutor, will incur a deduction of 10% for the first day, and 10% for each subsequent day including the actual day on which the work is received. Report requires students to demonstrate advanced scientific writing skills, including posing a research question related to a complex case, and formulation of an annotated bibliography.

Written report 2

Report will include the formulation of a quality improvement activity plan within complex health systems.

  • Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning abilities and synthesis of current best-evidence to develop and implement a safe and effective physiotherapy intervention plan for individuals with complex presentations that addresses the individual’s goals.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critique current literature and provide justification for an appropriate research question relevant to individuals with complex presentations.
  • Demonstrate competency in the dissemination of research evidence and clinical findings relating to individuals with complex presentations.
  • Demonstrate the application of skills that optimise the integration of research evidence and clinical practice within complex health systems.

Viva exam

Due: End of semester exam period

Students will be required to describe and justify evidence based assessment and treatment choices and advanced clinical reasoning related to a complex case.

Delivery and Resources

Assumed knowledge

This unit assumes that you have a good understanding of all content delivered in semester B across the core areas of physiotherapy practice. 

Teaching and Learning Strategy

Lectures will provide foundation knowledge and also use large group demonstrations and discussion, enabling students to use tutorial time efficiently to develop technical skills and clinical reasoning. There are 3 key modules (research planning, research integration and complex cases) all of which build on the skills and knowledge from semesters A, B and C with a focus now on increased complexity and integration of knowledge across core areas of physiotherapy within complex health systems.

Unit Organisation

This is a four credit point unit run over a 13 week session. There is an average of one two hour lecture and two hour tutorial each week.  Further information is available in iLearn.

Attendance

In the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences professionalism is a key capability embedded in all our programs. As part of developing professionalism, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences students are expected to attend all small group interactive sessions including tutorials, clinical and laboratory practical sessions. In most cases lectures are recorded; however, lecture recordings cannot be guaranteed and some discussion or content may not be available via the recording system.

All lectures and tutorials are scheduled in your individual timetable. The timetable for classes can be found on the University web site at: http://www.timetables.mq.edu.au/. You may make a request to your tutor to attend a different tutorial on a one-off basis for extenuating circumstances.

Failure to attend any learning and teaching activities, including lectures and tutorials, may impact your final results. It is the responsibility of the student to contact their tutor or the unit convenor by email to inform tutors if they are going to be absent.

Unit materials and readings

There is no compulsory textbook for this unit. Weekly readings will come from journal articles, text book chapters and online content.  Weekly readings will be listed within the tutorial notes on ilearn.

Technology and equipment

On-campus 

Teaching rooms are equipped with state of art audio-visual and ICT equipment including iPads, internet connection, high quality video cameras and multiple LCD screens. Students will use a range of physiotherapy specific equipment typically used in the assessment and management of people with a range of health conditions.

Off-campus

To study optimally when off campus you will need to have access to a reliable internet connection to retrieve unit information & at times to submit assessment tasks via iLearn.

Changes from Previous Offering

An advanced manual therapy component previously taught within subject has been removed and replaced with a module related to the integration of research evidence within complex health systems.
