Unit description Unit description
This elective unit for the Master of Public Health focuses on leadership, teamwork, and innovation that are key practical skills for your career in public health. You will learn to shape your understanding of leadership and apply it in a range of settings. You will develop your skills to collaborate and communicate effectively in multi-disciplinary teams of diverse backgrounds and in different contexts. You will also learn to apply reflective thinking to your public health practice and implement fresh, innovative ideas to address complex public health issues. You will engage with a wide variety of leaders in public health throughout the unit and learn from them what public health advocacy is and how to conduct an advocacy campaign.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Develop and apply teamwork processes and skills for authentic solutions to address real-world challenges for public health team work and leadership
  • Apply reflective thinking in relation to individual characteristics, style and personal attitudes and beliefs and consider how these impact on decision making

General Assessment Information

Information concerning Macquarie University's assessment policy is available at http://mq.edu.au/policy/docs/assessment/policy_2016.html. Grade descriptors and other information concerning grading requirements are contained in Schedule 1 of the Macquarie University Assessment Policy.

To pass this unit, students must demonstrate sufficient evidence of achievement of the learning outcomes and attempt all parts of all assessment tasks.

All final grades in the department of Health Systems and Populations are determined by a grading committee and are not the sole responsibility of the Unit Convenor.

Students will be awarded one of these grades plus a Standardised Numerical Grade (SNG). The SNG is not necessarily a summation of the individual assessment components. The final grade and SNG that are awarded reflect the corresponding grade descriptor in Schedule 1 of the Assessment Policy.

Late Submission of Work

All assignments which are officially received after the due date, and where no extension has been granted by the course convenor, will incur a deduction of 5% for the first day including the actual day on which the work is received, and 5% for each subsequent day. Weekends and public holidays are included. For example:

Group advocacy campaign

Due: Week 9
Weighting: 25%

Students will work in groups to prepare an advocacy campaign plan for public health and present a short (3 minute) video at a ‘Flickerfest’ style event.

(20% Group Task; 5% Peer Review)

Written reflection: Individual

Due: Week 10
Weighting: 30%

One week following the video presentations students will submit a reflection on the process of this advocacy campaign.

  • Apply reflective thinking in relation to individual characteristics, style and personal attitudes and beliefs and consider how these impact on decision making

Written assignment

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 45%

Students asked to demonstrate their understanding and application of all the content delivered in this unit. Students will be provided with short answer questions as well as questions related to leadership and management scenarios.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Develop personal definitions of leadership and leadership development plans
  • Develop and apply teamwork processes and skills for authentic solutions to address real-world challenges for public health team work and leadership

Student portfolio reflection

Students asked to submit a 500-word reflection of their learning and development across the unit.

Delivery and Resources

Unit Organisation

This is a four credit point unit run over a 13 week session.  There are lectures, tutorials and full day workshops.  Further information is available via the HSYP807 online Learning Management System (LMS) iLearn http://ilearn.mq.edu.au

 

Attendance

All lectures and tutorials are scheduled in your individual timetable.  Attendance is expected, as this is where the majority of learning occurs, in most cases lectures are recorded. Failure to attend may impact your final results. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the unit convenor by email to inform  if they are going to be absent. On-campus

Teaching rooms are equipped with state of art audio-visual and ICT equipment including iPads, internet connection, high quality video cameras and multiple LCD screens. 

Off-campus

To study optimally when off campus you will need to have access to a reliable internet connection to retrieve unit information & at times to submit assessment tasks via iLearn.
