Unit description Unit description
This is the first of two practical units in which students attend Macquarie University's Chiropractic and Research Centres as chiropractic interns. In this unit students become responsible for patient management and care under the guidance of the clinic supervisors.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Learning Outcomes Demonstrate an ability to take a chiropractic clinical history, perform the relevant physical examination, order any necessary radiographs, refer for any other necessary evaluation in order to provisionally diagnose the patient's condition and carry out safe and effective chiropractic management of a patient (as taught by the Department) within the allocated time. Demonstrate an ability to educate patients in the aims and objectives of the proposed care including a rehabilitation program. Demonstrate accurate and appropriate clinical record keeping skills. Demonstrate an understanding of effective administrative structures required for the running of a chiropractic clinic. Demonstrate satisfactory competency in the ongoing assessments and attendance criteria for the clinic internship. Demonstrate ability to meet quotas as determined by the Department with respect to patient consultation requirements as set out in the Council on Chiropractic Education Australasia Inc (CCEA) Standards for First Professional Award Programs in Chiropractic Guidelines (Appendix 1 in Clinic Manual) inclusive of radiography quotas set by the Department with respect to the number of diagnostic radiographs produced and reports written. Demonstrated compliance to all requirements for the unit as described in the Clinic Manual. Apply Skills and knowledge of professional topics to chiropractic practice, including ethics and jurisprudence. Critically analyse ethical and legal issues, chiropractic code of practice and compromising situations Gain an understanding of the occupational health and safety area and how chiropractors work in this field

General Assessment Information

A grade of INCOMPLETE may be awarded if all requirements EXCEPT Patient Numbers and/or Patient X-ray numbers are met by the end of the examination period at the discretion of the Director of Clinics. No INCOMPLETE Grades will be awarded for any other non-completions.

 

FAIL of the unit will be recommended if ANY of the Clinical requirements are not met by the end of the assessment period or a minimum overall raw mark of 70 is not attained. Should a student fail CHIR897, minimum attendance hours in clinic will be mandated even if patient treatment numbers have been attained during the retake of this unit.

Clinic Internship I and II: CHIR896 and CHIR897 will be awarded pass/fail grades only. In order to achieve a PASS grade, a student must attain a minimum aggregate overall raw mark of 70% across the assessments and satisfactory attendance. OCAs can only be completed during clinic shifts and not at fieldwork or placement locations. The FIRST attempt at each of the assessment tasks will be counted towards the Unit’s grade marks.

 

NO individual assessment task is considered a hurdle assessment. Students are therefore not permitted to re-sit any assessment due to failure on the first attempt.

Attendance at Clinic shifts, placement locations and fieldwork events is expected over a 12 month calendar period and does not follow academic semester calendar.
