Unit description Unit description
This unit will review the key stages of a scientific/medical research project, from conception to completion, in the university research setting.
Topics covered will include: project design and planning; establishing key project contributors; launching a project; managing a project underway; troubleshooting and dealing with change; record keeping; communicating and networking; publishing; and project completion. These topics will be explored in the context of short (1 year) and long (3 year) classical academic research projects. Students completing this course should have developed a clear understanding of how to deliver a research project from start to finish. Special guest lecturers will also provide insight to research projects in different contextual settings.

Important Academic Dates

Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates

Project Cycle Analysis 30% No Week 10
Case study evaluation 20% No Week 13

Ethics and Safety Review

Due: Week 3
Weighting: 10%

Choose a project from the exemplars and outline key ethical and safety concerns for the work. Explain the process by which you apply for human and animal ethics (where appropriate) in your faculty and how you might address key safety concerns. Clearly explain in the Macquarie University context. (500 words, images permitted) References: MQ university code for the responsible conduct of research

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of how to design and deliver a project plan
  • Critically evaluate components and deliverables of a project

Retrospective review of thesis

Due: week 6
Weighting: 40%

Review a doctoral thesis by publication from your discipline to determine what the project plan may have retrospectively involved (several exemplars suggested). Outline, what was the project timeframe (when were the articles published), what were the key experimental approaches. What would the goals of the overall doctoral work have been? Individual project goals?

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Critically evaluate components and deliverables of a project
  • Apply understanding of project management techniques in their disciplinary practice
  • Evaluate best troubleshooting approaches and the required associated steps
  • Coordinate a research project of various types with diverse multidisciplinary teams

Project Cycle Analysis

Due: Week 10
Weighting: 30%

Complete a graphical presentation of the project cycle in your discipline. Highlight at least three issues that might impact the project at any stage of the cycle, and outline approaches that might be taken to troubleshoot these issues as they arise. (1 page graphic and up to 500 words for each troubleshooting approach, plus 500 words outlining/summary)

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of how to design and deliver a project plan
  • Critically evaluate components and deliverables of a project
  • Apply understanding of project management techniques in their disciplinary practice
  • Evaluate best troubleshooting approaches and the required associated steps
  • Demonstrate skills in communication and self-directed learning

Case study evaluation

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 20%

Review cases presented during each 3 tutorials, and present your responses to how to act in each case as an oral presentation, poster, or video presentation.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of how to design and deliver a project plan
  • Critically evaluate components and deliverables of a project
  • Apply understanding of project management techniques in their disciplinary practice
