Unit description Unit description
The ANZAC Legend has long been at the core of Australian mythology. As well as tracing the history of the major conflicts that have engaged Australians from before white colonisation to the War on Terror, this course explores how the experience of war has shaped national identity. Themes will include: the idea of ANZAC and the militarisation of Australian History; the 'Australian way of war'; gender, race and ethnicity; relationships with allies and enemies; the homefront; loss, disability and rehabilitation; and other legacies of war and commemoration. A range of sources — from literature to film, from private diaries to official records — will be used to examine these themes. Documentary-style videos are used in place of lectures, allowing students class time to work on projects that explore the experiences of Australians at war.

General Assessment Information

In order to satisfactorily complete this unit you are required to use the resources supplied to you, to complete all assessment tasks, and submit them by their respective submission dates (unless an extension has been arranged). 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests

Online Quizz

This tasks consists of ten online quizzes with each quiz worth 2% of the final grade. The quiz will be delivered and graded through the learning management system and will be based on the videos and readings for the relevant week. The group presentation is a timed assessment and no late submissions will be accepted.

Major Research Project

Due: Wednesday Week 12
Weighting: 50%

Throughout the semester students will work in groups gathering data and researching on a project topic. They will then submit an individual 2500 word essay response to the project question in Week 12, and present (as a group) a 10-minute overview of the group’s findings using visual aids in class in Week 13.  The individual essay is marked out of 40, the group presentation out of 10, to give a total mark out of 50 for the project. The group presentation is a timed assessment and no late submissions will be accepted.

Online Reflective Portfolio

Due: Weekly
Weighting: 30%

Guided questions will assist students to reflect on the unit content and learning outcomes. Each week tasks will be set to which students will respond in their portfolio. In addition, at the end of every week they will reflect on the themes and issues presented and discussed.

Delivery and Resources

You will be provided with videos, resources, readings and links on the unit's iLearn site. You will also conduct elements of your own research in preparation for in-class discussions, weekly quizzes and group work. Each week you will be required to engage with the material provided and to discuss it with your peers in seminars and in conjunction with your instructor. 

The major piece of assessment is an individual project, but you will prepare for this in a group environment throughout the semester to produce original historical research on Australian history. Seminar class time will be set aside to work on this project, although additional work outside of seminars will also be required.
