This unit is designed to provide students with an overview of Croatian literature and enable them to study a number of Croatian short stories, poems, dramas and novels.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

Delivery and Resources

Unit requirements and expectations

The unit consists of six topics from which students choose three lessons (topics). The topics are structured as follows:

 1. Her Story (about women in Croatian Literature and Culture; women’s writing and writing about women, from Renaissance Dubrovnik to post/feminism).

2. Adventure (from the lighthouse to exploration adventures; stories of explorers and exploration in Croatian literature from the Renaissance to postmodernism).

3. Islands (the story of the Croatian islands, their histories, literatures, poetry, legends and the poetics of everyday living, from the first documents of the Croatian Glagolitic alphabet to today’s ‘policy of sustainable development’)

4. Us and Others  (How the ‘Croatian Story’ was constructed in relation to Others, that is the nations that live around and with Croatians as well as in relation to the influence of and the value system of the Croatian diaspora).

5. The City (Croatian cities in history and the present, the story of Dubrovnik’s  past and present, Dubrovnik writers, the cultural geography of the contemporary city in Croatia and the region).

6. The Real and the Fantastic (The story of Croatian Tales of Fantasy, their contexts, the way they shaped heritage of the nation, and influences to other myths, legends and stories. The story of Croatian early modernism).

Plagiarism and Grading

Plagiarism

Assignments are to be your own work. Using someone else's words (either another student's, from a book, a journal article or a website) without clear acknowledgement is plagiarism and can incur serious penalties. Grading

High Distinction denotes performance which meets all unit objectives in such an exceptional way and with such marked excellence that it deserves the highest level of recognition;

Credit denotes performance which is substantially better than would normally be expected of competent students in the unit;
