Unit description Unit description
This unit provides students with the opportunity to acquire a deeper understanding of Japan through research on a particular subject. After choosing a research topic in consultation with the unit convenor, students undertake a 5000–6000 word research paper. Within the framework of Japanese studies, research topics can be chosen from a wide spectrum of Japan related fields including: Japanese language; culture; history; economics; politics; social and contemporary issues; and international relations involving Japan. Japanese native speakers may enrol in this unit.

Preliminary Work

Due: Week 3
Weighting: 20%

In this task, you are required to develop and submit your essay outline, abstract and bibliography.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Develop research questions and original ideas for the chosen topic with academic rigour
  • Independently identify and search for relevant scholarly resources

Seminar Presentation

Due: Week 12
Weighting: 10%

In this task, you are required to present your paper. Instruction will be provided in iLearn.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate research initiative and conduct research in an efficient and timely manner
  • Develop research questions and original ideas for the chosen topic with academic rigour
  • Independently identify and search for relevant scholarly resources
  • Effectively utilise a range of high quality resources to support analysis and/or argument

Draft Research Paper

Due: Week 10
Weighting: 30%

In this task, you are required to submit a complete draft of your fully and correctly referenced research paper. Marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Develop research questions and original ideas for the chosen topic with academic rigour
  • Independently identify and search for relevant scholarly resources
  • Effectively utilise a range of high quality resources to support analysis and/or argument

Final Research Paper

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 40%

In this task, you are required to revise the research paper draft based on the feedback and submit the fully and correctly referred final research paper of 5,000-6,000 words. Marking criteria will be provided in iLearn.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Develop research questions and original ideas for the chosen topic with academic rigour
  • Independently identify and search for relevant scholarly resources

This unit will be conducted through individual consultations.

This is a research unit and relevant resources should be located using Macquarie University Library resources and the internet. Some resources are provided in Learn: https://ilearn.mq.edu.au. You must have regular, reliable access to a computer and the internet to complete this unit.

Late Submission

Assignments are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.
