Unit description
This unit provides students with practical opportunities to develop their translation competencies further. This unit involves the translation of various types of texts. Students discuss problems encountered in the course of translation such as textual, stylistics, register, and language usage issues, as well as equivalence at different levels. It is aimed at introducing strategies to solve more challenging problems and leading students to establish their own strategies.

These translation tasks are generally weekly or bi-weekly depending on the length of translation materials in various topic areas. A minimum of 6 submitted assignments are assessable.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify and analyse translation problems in a variety of text types in a range of topic areas;
- Devise appropriate strategies for tackling the problems;
- Apply the principles of translation to the solution of the problems;
- Develop and record your own translation strategies;
- Demonstrate ability of research and teamwork for translation;

Assignments LOTE to English
Due: TBA
Weighting: 15%
These translation tasks are generally weekly or bi-weekly depending on the length of the translation materials in various topic areas. A minimum of 6 submitted assignments are assessable.
On successful completion you will be able to:

- Devise appropriate strategies for tackling the problems;
- Apply the principles of translation to the solution of the problems;
- Develop and record your own translation strategies;

Reflective Journal
Due: 10/06/2015
Weighting: 10%
Students are required to maintain a reflective journal with a weekly entry of 250 words in each direction.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify and analyse translation problems in a variety of text types in a range of topic areas;
- Devise appropriate strategies for tackling the problems;
- Apply the principles of translation to the solution of the problems;
- Develop and record your own translation strategies;
- Demonstrate ability of research and teamwork for translation;
- Further understand professional ethics issues;
- Demonstrate self-reflection, critical analysis, problem-solving and creative thinking.
Exam English into LOTE
Due: 09/06/2015
Weighting: 30%
Students are required to complete one 3 hour exam paper from English into LOTE.
On successful completion you will be able to:
- Identify and analyse translation problems in a variety of text types in a range of topic areas;
- Devise appropriate strategies for tackling the problems;
- Apply the principles of translation to the solution of the problems;
- Develop and record your own translation strategies;
- Demonstrate ability of research and teamwork for translation;
- Further understand professional ethics issues;
- Demonstrate self-reflection, critical analysis, problem-solving and creative thinking.
Exam LOTE into English
Due: 10/06/2015
Weighting: 30%
Students are required to complete one 3 hour exam paper from LOTE into English.
On successful completion you will be able to:

Delivery and Resources
The learning and teaching strategies used in this Unit are two face-to-face sessions per week.
It is expected that students in this unit will prepare translation tasks and research translation topic areas before class, participate in class discussions and complete translation assignments and write reflective translation journals after class. Students are expected to be active participants in the learning process.
