Unit description Unit description
In this unit students work with a supervisor on the commencement to their literature review and propose a research design for their dissertation. The review forms the justification for the research project undertaken in PSY934. The topic chosen should be related to clinical psychology. The goals of the unit are to encourage review and consideration of background literature, to prepare a literature overview and proposed method, and to prepare an ethics submission.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Conducting critical evaluations of theories and empirical studies for a particular population/ topic relevant to clinical psychology.
  • Designing and conducting an empirical research project which has direct relevance for clinical psychology.
  • Writing a first draft literature review in journal format suitable for a psychology journal. [This will form one of the two papers of the dissertation which will be completed in PSY934]

Literature Review

The first draft of the literature review paper will form the literature review paper for the Dissertation unit (to be completed in PSY934).

  • The Literature Review must involve a critical appraisal of a specific topic area relevant to clinical psychology.
  • The Literature Review can be closely related to; and can be used in the formulation of the Empirical Journal Article, however the introduction section of the empirical paper should not be a simple cut and paste job of select paragraphs from the Literature Review paper.

Empirical Project: Ethics

Due: 4th November 2016
Weighting: 50%

Design and prepare empirical project which will form the empirical journal paper for PSY934.

The ethics application for project must be submitted by due date.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Designing and conducting an empirical research project which has direct relevance for clinical psychology.

Delivery and Resources

This unit consists of 6 x 2 hour seminars held in Session 1.

Students will be required to find a Supervisor from a member of staff from the Departmnet of Psychology who agrees to supervise their dissertation work by mid-Session 1. The supervisor will assist the student to complete the requirements of this unit as well as the subsequent unit PSY934.
