Unit description Unit description
This unit is designed for advanced learners to improve their reading skills by exposing them to Japanese source materials from diverse genres and styles. Some reading texts are selected individually to suit each student's area of (professional) interest (such as economics, science, literature, sociology, linguistics). Assessment is based on unit participation (in-class and/or online); regular assignments (in-class/online tests); as well as improvement throughout the semester.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Students will be able to efficiently process texts of various genre depending on modes of communication by using three different reading strategies - viz. verbatim, scanning and skimming
  • Students will be able to evaluate and analyse ideas and information by incorporating their knowledge of the role of the Japanese language in its cultural and societal setting
  • Students will be able to search for relevant sources of information for the given topic and thus demonstrate independent management and skills in lifelong learning of language.
  • Students will be able to conceptualise information and employ the Japanese language flexibly for social academic and professional purposes
  • Students will be able to recognise structural properties of the Japanese language in relations to variations such as styles, register and the purpose of each text.

General Assessment Information

Supplementary tests & Late submissions

If you anticipate unavoidable difficulty in sitting for tests (in class and online), contact the convener as soon as possible. A request for a supplementary test will be considered only in the case of serious illness or disruption.

Assignments are compulsory and must be submitted on time. As a general rule, extensions will not be granted without a valid and documented reason (e.g. medical certificate). Late submissions will be penalised by 5% for each day (including weekends) the assignment task is late. No assignments will be accepted after assignments have been corrected and feedback has been provided. Assignment tasks handed in early will not be marked and returned before the due date.

Disruption to Studies

This Policy applies only to serious and unavoidable disruptions that arise after a study period has commenced. Such disruptions commonly result from personal, social or domestic nature and may include illness (either physical or psychological), accident, injury, societal demands (such as jury service), bereavement, family breakdown or unexpected changes in employment situations.   Please refer to MQ Policy Central for more information (http://mq.edu.au/policy/docs/disruption_studies/policy.html).

Weekly Quizzes

Weighting: 30%

Students will engage in a small problem-solving project each week. The aim of this exercise is to review and consolidate reading skills covered in each class.

Class Test

Due: Week 8
Weighting: 30%

Duration of Class Test is 90 minutes.  A dictionary is allowed in this test.  Information on this test will be made available in Week 7.   For external students,  a test date via iLearn will be scheduled.

Project

Due: 12 June via iLearn
Weighting: 35%

Project questions will be given to students in Week 9.  Students will engage in a major problem-solving project. Students will demonstrate the result of their learning from each week's task. Students will use any available resources to 1) locate suitable authentic and semi-authentic texts of information, 2) identify relevant sections in the text and 3) produce a genre specific text by compiling/summarising the information.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Students will be able to evaluate and analyse ideas and information by incorporating their knowledge of the role of the Japanese language in its cultural and societal setting

Participation is a vital part of assessment. For external students, online discussion and tasks will serve as 'attendance'.

Delivery and Resources

Required and recommend texts and/or materials

No textbook is required for this unit. Handouts and resources will be provided in class and online.

The online unit (iLearn) can be accessed at: https://ilearn.mq.edu.au. Students must have regular, reliable access to a computer and the internet to complete this unit. Completion of assessment tasks will also require a computer with Japanese fonts enabled. Basic computer skills (e.g., internet browsing) and skills in word processing in Japanese and English are required.
