Unit description	Unit description The objective of this unit is to introduce students to the extraordinary rich cultural heritage of Croatia and Croatians. The lectures cover history of Croatian lands from prehistory to 21st century (Iron Ages, Roman period, Great migrations, Croatian medieval state, Croatian lands under Venice, Habsburgs and Ottoman empire, Croatia in 20th century, and Croatia since independence). There are also lectures addressing geography, political system and state symbols of Croatia as well as history and culture of Croatians in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

General Assessment Information

To complete the unit satisfactorily you will need to achieve an overall mark worth 50% or above.

Please submit all your written assessments through Turnitin, and do the quizzes through the iLearn quiz tool.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON FINAL MARKS: Please note with respect to the marks you receive for work during the session: that the marks given are indicative only; final marks will be determined after moderation. See further the note on Results in the Policies and Procedures section below.

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Early feedback will be provided to students through lecture questions and Week 3 exercise in proper referencing of academic paper.

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 20%
This is a hurdle assessment task (see assessment policy for more information on hurdle assessment tasks)

Answer a series of questions (e.g. multiple choice, true/false, recognize the image) from lectures in limited time. The questions will be based on lectures and lecture powerpoints. The quiz will go live at 6pm on the Thursday of the week 13 and close at 11.59pm on the Friday night (6-7/6). You will not have access to the quiz after this time and you cannot take a ‘make up’ quiz later to catch up. Complete the quiz using the iLearn quiz tool..

Required Reading

CROATIA At First Sight , edited by Sanda Lucija Udier (Zagreb: FF Press, 2017). Book can be purchased from your lecturers.

Sydney metropolitan students are encouraged to make use of the University Library. You may also find that your local library has some Croatian books which may be of some use to you.

There is no on-campus session for CRO 108. The lectures are recorded as audio files and together with powerpoints can be accessed through iLearn page.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Plagiarism and Grading

Plagiarism

Assignments are to be your own work. Using someone else's words (either another student's, from a book, a journal article or a website) without clear acknowledgement is plagiarism and can incur serious penalties. The University defines plagiarism in its rules: “Plagiarism involves using the work of another person and presenting it as one’s own.” Plagiarism is a serious breach of the University’s rules and carries significant penalties. Grading

The university has a set of guidelines on the distribution of grades across the range from fail to high distinction.

HD	High Distinction denotes performance which meets all unit objectives in such an exceptional way and with such marked excellence that it deserves the highest level of recognition;
D	Distinction denotes performance which clearly deserves a very high level of recognition as an excellent achievement in the unit;
Cr	Credit denotes performance which is substantially better than would normally be expected of competent students in the unit;
P	Pass denotes performance which satisfies unit objectives;
F	Fail denotes performance which does not meet unit objectives
