Unit description Unit description
In this unit, students will have the opportunity to investigate a specific research issue in their domain of choice within Accessible Communication. They can focus their research investigation in either Accessibility and Intercultural Communication, Accessibility and Translation & Interpreting, Accessibility and Editing & Publishing, or Accessibility and Disability Studies as an extension of their initial proposal in their Research Methods unit. This unit allows them to be able to survey current studies in their choice of research topic and conduct an empirical research study based on that to help them become more informed Accessible Communication specialists.

Important Academic Dates

Information about important academic dates including deadlines for withdrawing from units are available at https://www.mq.edu.au/study/calendar-of-dates

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of Accessible Communication.
  • Demonstrate critical analysis of research problems in one of the five possible areas of Accessible Communication focus within the program.
  • Discuss, analyse, and communicate findings of Accessible Communication research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

General Assessment Information

Submission and Feedback

All assessment tasks in LING981 need to be submitted via Turnitin, and all feedback will also be given through there.

Late submission of an assignment

  • Late submissions without an extension will receive a penalty of 5% per day (including weekend days) of the total mark available for the assessment task.
  • Late submission of an assessment task without an extension will not be permitted after marks have been released to the rest of the class. Any student who has failed to submit the expected task will receive a mark of 0 for that assessment task.
  •  Extensions will only be given in special circumstances, and can be requested by completing the Special Consideration request at ask.mq.edu.au and providing the requisite supporting documentation.
  • For more information on Special Consideration, see the university website https://student s.mq.edu.au/study/my-study-program/special-consideration
  • Assignments submitted after the deadline, regardless of the reason, will be marked and returned at a date determined by the unit convenor.
  • Extensions cannot continue beyond the start of the following semester, and students should be aware that long extensions may impact graduation dates.
  • If a student fails the unit due to non-submission of an assessment task, an FA grade will be applied in accordance with the University's Assessment Policy.
  • Unit convenors have the discretion to determine whether or not students should fail a unit on the basis of lateness penalties alone if other learning outcomes of the unit have been met.

Research proposal

Due: Week 5
Weighting: 20%

The research proposal requires the students to identify the research plan for the research project for the semester. This needs to clearly indicate the research question, methodology for both data collection and analysis, and the significance of this research.

On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Assess the appropriateness of a research proposal with focused research questions and methodology.
  • Demonstrate familiarity with the literature of a specific domain in the field of Accessible Communication.
  • Demonstrate critical analysis of research problems in one of the five possible areas of Accessible Communication focus within the program.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

Research Proposal Presentation

Due: Week 6
Weighting: 20%

The oral presentation allows the students to present their plan for research for the semester and provides them a platform to gain feedback on the details of their research.

Research Paper

Due: Week 13
Weighting: 60%

This 5,000 word research report allows the students to present the details of their research project outlining in details their research questions, data collection and analysis methodologies, findings, discussion relevant to existing literature and the significance of their research findings.

  • Discuss, analyse, and communicate findings of Accessible Communication research.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate research methodology and apply it in an extended research project on an area in accessible communication.

Delivery and Resources

The unit is delivered via one-to-one consultation with the unit convenor and/or the assigned supervisor for the research project at a time determined and agreed upon by all parties involved before the commencement of the semester.

Unit Schedule

As this is an individual research project, meeting schedules will be determined and agreed upon by all parties involved with the convenor ensuring that sufficient guidance and support are given to the students leading up to each of the three assessments in the unit.
