Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English
  • identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies
  • create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions
  • demonstrate the ability to recognize and write about 1200-1500 Chinese characters

General Assessment Information

Please note:

(1) Final examination will be conducted during formal examination period after teaching of the semester has completed. Students must attend the final examination in Australia. The time of examination is centrally allocated. Please make sure that you stay in Sydney during the formal examination period.

(2) Indicative examples of assessment tasks will be available on iLearn.

(3) Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.

Written Assignments

Due: TBA
Weighting: 14%

These assignments will assess students’ mastery of grammatical knowledge, as well as essay writing and translation skills. These tasks are carried out in and out of class.


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English

  • create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions
  • demonstrate the ability to recognize and write about 1200-1500 Chinese characters

Oral Tests

Due: Week 7, 13
Weighting: 20%

The oral tests will assess students’ oral competency and intercultural communication skills. 

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English
  • identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies
  • create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions

Mid-term test (in class)

Due: week 7
Weighting: 22%

The mid semester in class test assesses students' mastery and knowledge of the language and content learned in the first half of the semester, including vocabulary, usages, grammatical constructions, translation and reading comprehension. It includes written and aural components.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English
  • demonstrate the ability to recognize and write about 1200-1500 Chinese characters

Final exam

Due: Central exam
Weighting: 25%

The final exam will assess students’ mastery and knowledge of the language and content learned in the second half  (but not limited to) of the semester, including vocabulary, usages, grammatical constructions, translation and reading comprehension. 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English
  • demonstrate the ability to recognize and write about 1200-1500 Chinese characters

Participatory tasks

Due: Continuous
Weighting: 6%

This task assess students' on-going and active participation in the course, which includes completion of assigned homework, preparation before each class (seminar and tutorial), active contribution to class discussion, engagement in class individual and group learning activities, and on-time completion and submission of assignments.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • demonstrate a sophisticated awareness and application of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English
  • identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies

  • demonstrate the ability to recognize and write about 1200-1500 Chinese characters

End of semester listening test

Due: week 13
Weighting: 3%

This task assesses listening comprehension of unread materials. 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language

Quizzes

Due: continuous
Weighting: 10%

This task consists of a series of quizzes which  assess students' mastery of vocabulary, usages, grammatical structures at a weekly or two-weekly intervals. 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language
  • identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at advanced level

New Standard Chinese Reader Book 6. CDs are available as supplementary learning material, which can also be accessed on-line.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
