Unit description Unit description
This unit is designed to allow students to pursue study in an area that is of particular interest to them. The content of the unit, including teaching and learning activities, will be agreed between the student and the unit convenor (or delegate) prior to enrolment in the unit. The content and delivery of the unit will be in accordance with relevant University policies. The outcomes and graduate capabilities developed in the unit will vary but will be appropriate to the advanced level of the unit. As well as having significant knowledge of the area to be studied the student is expected to be capable of self-directed learning.

Pre Trip Planning and Report

Due: 05/07/2019
Weighting: 15%

The purpose of this task is for students to obtain, analyse and interpret information and data relevant to making an evidence based decision in relation to participating in the study tour to the chosen country. 

Students apply secondary research and critical thinking to determine their expectations of the culture/s they are to visit. Such findings are communicated in writing in a 2 page report to be uploaded on iLearn prior to departure from Sydney.

Three criteria will be used:

  • Depth of critical discussion.
  • Identification of key health and safety issues

It is important to provide a reasoned discussion of expectations of the cultural experience

Individual feedback on this task will be provided with an accompanying marking rubric

Participation

Due: 22/07/2019
Weighting: 15%

Students are expected to actively participate in ALL activities of the tour. Students should engage during presentations, Q&A and networking functions held at the university and industry partners.

Post Trip Presentation

Due: 26/07/2019
Weighting: 25%

The purpose of this assignment is to assess students’ capacity to communicate action learning experiences orally and pictorially, through appropriate media learning tools (e.g. PowerPoint) with confidence and in a professional manner. 

Students provide an oral summary of their cultural immersion experience including discussion of insights gained into business, management and cultural practices in the host country compared to that of their home country. Students should make notes when attending talks and seminars at University and industry partners. You should also take photos of items that represent the culture (given that they are within the laws of that country). These could be used during the delivery of your oral presentation. Staff and students from Macquarie University will be invited to your presentation. 

Each student will present for 15 mins followed by a Q&A session

Three criteria will be used to assess your presentation:

  • Content - Knowledge of material and appropriate data
  • Delivery -audience is engaged and material is presented through appropriate media and learning tools.

Overall structure – logical, coherent, formal introduction and conclusion

Feedback will be provided through:

Hard copy written individual feedback on your presentation and an accompanying marking rubric.

Reflective Journal

Due: 28/07/2019
Weighting: 45%

Maximum Word Count for the journal will be 2000 words. You might include a cover page with an interesting photo from your trip.

The purpose of this Journal is to assess students’ capacity to obtain, analyse and interpret data relevant to making evidence-based decisions for evolving Business/Commerce tasks in diverse contexts.

Students apply personal action learning, critical thinking and problem solving to assess the similarities and differences in business, management and cultural practices in a host country compared to that of their home country. Findings are communicated in writing in the form of a learning journal. You should reflect on some of the business practices in Australia and compare these to the ones your were exposed to in the visiting country.  This could be in the field of accounting, finance, banking, manufacturing, culture and cuisine. You could further reflect upon the customs of the visiting country and compare it to your home country.

  • Communicate orally and in writing with confidence about cultural and commerce differences and similarities

Delivery and Resources

Students are expected to simultaneously demonstrate knowledge about the foreign market visited and apply knowledge gained to their disciplinary areas. The unit is structured with seminars & presentations from institutions representing government and commerce in the visiting country.  On the study tour, students will be provided with a unique opportunity to speak directly with international business leaders and scholars across national boundaries and build their real and virtual international networks. The ultimate objective is for students to 'bridge' theory to practice in an international context. 

Students should carry the laptops or devices that allows them to note down summaries of talks and seminars and other resources that will help in completing their assessment tasks. As the unit is delivered in an intensive mode please pay close attention to the assessment guides and deadlines. While on the overseas location students should follow the customs of the country particularly the written and unwritten rules. You will be made ware of this via the pre-departure information sessions held at the North Ryde Campus and at other locations such as the Sydney embassy of the of the visiting country.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University.
