Unit description Unit description
This unit introduces students to the discipline of psychology through a focus on the physiological bases of behaviour; learning; motivation; the nature of personality and psychopathology; and cross-cultural and Indigenous psychology. The unit conveys information about substantive material, and assumptions of theory associated with the science and profession of psychology through lecture and tutorial/practical classes. The unit introduces students to research methods in psychology through a series of methodology lectures. A further important aim of the unit is to develop students' competency in critical thinking and essay writing in psychology.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Demonstrate research and study skills (developed through planning research assignments, achieving study goals, and meeting deadlines).
  • ULO2: Apply communication, interpersonal and team skills in written assignments and by working with fellow students on group tasks and discussions on assignment tasks.
  • ULO3: Develop information technology skills through practical assignments and using the web-based elements of the course.
  • ULO4: Foster critical thinking skills through discussion of competing theories of psychological phenomena and understanding of scientific methodology.
  • ULO5: Display an appreciation of Ethical Issues from class discussions and participating in research.

Invigilated examination of 100 multiple choice questions with 2 .5 hours to answer the questions.

  • Display an appreciation of Ethical Issues from class discussions and participating in research.

Essay

Assessment Type 1: Essay
Indicative Time on Task 2: 25 hours
Due: 5 PM 01/01/2021
Weighting: 25%

1250 word essay examining a key concept in psychological research.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate research and study skills (developed through planning research assignments, achieving study goals, and meeting deadlines).
  • Apply communication, interpersonal and team skills in written assignments and by working with fellow students on group tasks and discussions on assignment tasks.
  • Develop information technology skills through practical assignments and using the web-based elements of the course.
  • Foster critical thinking skills through discussion of competing theories of psychological phenomena and understanding of scientific methodology.

Research Design Quizzes

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: Sunday 11 PM Weekly (2 quizzes per week)
Weighting: 10%

10 quizzes, one each week over 10 weeks. Each quiz is worth 1% and consists of 10 multiple-choice questions based on the Research Design content.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate research and study skills (developed through planning research assignments, achieving study goals, and meeting deadlines).
  • Develop information technology skills through practical assignments and using the web-based elements of the course.
  • Display an appreciation of Ethical Issues from class discussions and participating in research.

Research participation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 4 hours
Due: 5 PM 15/01/2021
Weighting: 5%

Participation in online research studies


On successful completion you will be able to:

Online Lecture Quizzes (1 & 2)

Due: Quiz 1: Jan 10, 11 PM Quiz 2: Jan 17, 11 PM
Weighting: 10%

Two online, multiple-choice quizzes on lecture content, each with 25 questions, held in the middle and end of the session.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate research and study skills (developed through planning research assignments, achieving study goals, and meeting deadlines).
  • Develop information technology skills through practical assignments and using the web-based elements of the course.

Tutorial Participation

Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 0 hours
Due: Weekly (2 per week)
Weighting: 10%

Participation in tutorial activities is necessary to be able to answer examination and quiz questions.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate research and study skills (developed through planning research assignments, achieving study goals, and meeting deadlines).
  • Foster critical thinking skills through discussion of competing theories of psychological phenomena and understanding of scientific methodology.
