Unit description
In this unit we examine a range of embodied subjects that stand in a relation of crisis and/or dissent in the context of dominant Australian culture. We focus specifically on how such apparatuses of racialized punishment as the camp, prison, reserve and detention centre have been constitutive in founding and shaping the Australian nation. We examine: Aboriginal sovereignty and the colonial camp; the cultural politics of terrorism and state violence; the power of whiteness; the racialization of criminality and the prison industry; histories of political internment; and Australia's treatment of refugees and asylum seekers. These topics are examined through the lens of social justice and are situated in the context of film, documentaries and contemporary news media. The unit brings into focus the manner in which targeted communities have mobilized activist networks and a range of media in order to work toward social change and a more just society. |

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
- ULO1: evaluate the ways in which the categories of nation and national identity are inscribed with a series of normative cultural values.
- ULO2: synthesize and articulate the relations between knowledge and power in the context of nation.
- ULO3: analyse institutions of authority in order to disclose such things as institutional racism and other discriminatory practices.
- ULO4: analyse cultural difference and social justice concerns within the context of the Australian nation and its relation to global events and issues.
- ULO5: apply critical argumentation and cultural literacy skills to contentious national debates.
- ULO6: communicate socially and ethically active skills to analyse and solve problems.

General Assessment Information
- Special Consideration: If you have experienced an unavoidable and serious disruption and are unable to complete a task by the due date, please request Special Consideration via ask.mq.edu.au. For more information about the Special Consideration process please click here.
- Late Submission: Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests.
- Grades: In line with the Macquarie University Assessment Policy, grades align with the descriptors available here.

- Unit Delivery: This unit will be taught via a combination of lectures and tutorials that begin in week one. For lecture times and classes, please consult the MQ timetable website: http://www.timetables.mq.edu.au.
- Attendance: Over the course of this unit, we are going to explore a series of contentious topics, ideas and issues in our lectures and tutorials. As the learning outcomes suggest, the activities we undertake are designed to engage with ideas about power, social justice and race in Australia. We aim to ensure that you finish the unit with not only new knowledge; but also enhanced critical and analytical skills that will be valuable in the workplace. As such, it is strongly recommended that you attend all the lectures and tutorials. They are designed to extend your skills and knowledge, prepare you to undertake assessments and ensure you get the most out of this unit. Students who elect to not attend tutorials and lectures will miss out on unit content and learning activities, and do so at their own risk.
