Unit description Unit description

This unit continues the study of Italian grammar and idiom; revises and consolidates work done in Italian Studies 1 and 2; and develops students' reading skills.

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop elementary level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Italian language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a few aspects of Italian-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy the grammatical structures of Italian at elementary level.
  • ULO4: Apply relevant language conventions to create meaningful intercultural encounters.

General Assessment Information

Assignment 1

Due: Week 1 Weighting: 15%

This first task is a coprehension exercise based on a short film

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Listening skills: understand enough to be able to meet needs of a concrete type provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated; understand phrases and expressions related to areas of most immediate priority (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment) provided speech is clearly and slowly articulated; identify the main point of TV news items reporting events, accidents etc. where the visual supports the commentary; follow changes of topic of factual TV news items, and form an idea of the main content.
  • Writing skills: write short, simple formulaic notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need; write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.
  • Gain an appreciation of the Italian culture through textual (including literature) and aural material introduced in the class resources and discussed online.

Assignment 2

Due: Week 2 Weighting: 15%

Assignment 2 is based on Capitolo 12 of the text book.

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Reading skills: understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.
  • Writing skills: write short, simple formulaic notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need; write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.

Assignment 3

Due: Week 3 Weighting: 15%

Assignment 3 - Comprehension exercise based on Le ricette degli amici di cucina.it, Natale 2001, PDF format (from iLearn).

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Reading skills: understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.
  • Writing skills: write short, simple formulaic notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need; write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.
  • Gain an appreciation of the Italian culture through textual (including literature) and aural material introduced in the class resources and discussed online.

Assignment 4

Due: Week 4 Weighting: 15%

Assignment 4 is based on Capitolo 13 of the text book.

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Reading skills: understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.
  • Writing skills: write short, simple formulaic notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need; write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.

Participation

Due: on-going Weighting: 5%

This is based on students participation in the discussion forums, boards etc on iLearn.

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Reading skills: understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.
  • Writing skills: write short, simple formulaic notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need; write a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors like “and”, “but” and “because”
  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.

Final Test

Due: Week 5 Weighting: 35%

The take home examination is based on Capitolo 12 & 13 of the textbook, as well as other aspects of material covered so far.

On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Reading skills: understand short, simple texts on familiar matters of a concrete type which consist of high frequency everyday or job-related language; understand short, simple texts containing the highest frequency vocabulary, including a proportion of shared international vocabulary items.

  • Read, listen to, comprehend and discuss a variety of Italian texts.

Late Assessment Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments, i.e., weekly group forum discussions.

If a student is prevented by serious and unavoidable disruption from completing unit requirements in accordance with their ability, they may apply for support under the Special Consideration Policy. Online assessment covering individual book chapters. These exercises are based on the workbook material accompanying the text book.

The final test covers all material studied in this session.

Delivery and Resources

There are no iLectures for this unit. In the Materiale di Aiuto (iLearn page) you will find presentations on the only two important structures: the imperative (Formal register) and the conditional (present and past).

You work at YOUR own pace; there are deadlines set for all assignments BUT if you need an extension let the tutor in charge know.

You are expected to:

• read carefully through Capitolo 12 e 13 of the textbook;

• complete the exercises: you will find the answers to the textbook exercises in the Materiale di Aiuto folder.

• Open the powerpoint presentations on the Condizionale and the Imperativo from the Materiale di Aiuto folder.

• Download the video Stella for your Assignment  1 (Audio/Video ) from the Materiale di Aiuto folder or the home page.

• Download the Ricettario for your Assignment 3 (Esercizio di comprensione) from the Materiale di Aiuto folder or the home page.

• Complete your final test when it becomes available (just before the due date)

• Interact with other students using the Discussion board - Chiacchieriamo un po', (this will be your participation mark) - you should post a few messages EACH week.
