Unit description
This unit is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required for effective problem solving and critical analysis in business project management. Students will gain an understanding of the nature and scope of leadership and technical capabilities needed for effective project management. The unit includes an analysis of: the definition, scoping and assessment of project feasibility; project planning and procurement; building a project team; delivery-time, cost and quality; project resource management; managing project risks; and project communications and marketing. These issues are critically examined through a combination of formal learning, group and individual project work, and interactive class-based activities. |

Late Assessment Policy:
Late assessment submissions must be submitted through the appropriate submission link in iLearn. No extensions will be granted unless an application for Special Consideration is made and approved. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24-hour period or part thereof that the submission is late. Late submissions will not be accepted after solutions have been discussed and/or made available.
Note: applications for Special Consideration Policy must be made within 5 (five) business days of the due date and time.

This assessment will require students to produce a 1,500 word (excluding references) essay and demonstrate research skills by locating and reviewing relevant secondary research on aspects of contemporary project management. This could relate to stakeholder engagement, project scope and timelines, financing and control. Drawing on the extant literature, students are expected to clearly define concepts, identify and critically analyse relevant studies and themes for developing and supporting arguments in relation to the assigned topic. Reference should be made to current issues in the project management literature.

Indicative Time on Task 2: 25 hours
Due: Week 12
Weighting: 45%
This group assignment requires students to: (a) Research and present an analysis of a completed business project (e.g. a government construction project); (b) Identify key problem areas in terms of project planning and execution, their causes and solutions in the areas of stakeholder management, definition of scope and timelines, financing and project control; (c) Treat this group assignment as a mini case and present an analysis of the effectiveness of the group in managing the min-project. The written component – the Group Project Analysis Report – is a 3,000 word report, due Week 12 and worth 30%. Presentations are up to 12 minutes in duration per group, scheduled for Week 12 or 13 and worth 15%.
