Unit description Unit description

This unit explores the practices and philosophies underpinning leadership and motivation, encouraging students to develop integrative, complex thinking. Case studies from around the world enable participants to evaluate theoretical and empirical contributions to leadership while reflecting on their own leadership and motivation practices. The unit focuses on leadership’s important contribution to high performance and resilience in an enterprise, with particular emphasis on sustainable leadership practices. The overriding objective is to equip students with a theoretical understanding and set of tools and frameworks that enable them to diagnose leadership issues and propose responsible solutions in complex, diverse global contexts.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Analyse and describe the theoretical and research contributions underpinning leadership and motivation.
  • ULO2: Critically analyse global leadership by diagnosing applied aspects of leadership and motivation in diverse contexts through case studies, both as an individual and a group.
  • ULO3: Analyse the importance of diverse ethical leadership principles.
  • ULO4: Assess the relationship between leadership and effective managerial performance.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Policy:

Late assessment submissions must be submitted through the appropriate submission link in iLea rn. No extensions will be granted unless an application for Special Consideration is made and approved. There will be a deduction of 10% of the total available marks made from the total awarded mark for each 24 hour period or part thereof that the submission is late. Late submissions will not be accepted after solutions have been discussed and/or made available.

Note: applications for Special Consideration Policy must be made within 5 (five) business days of the due date and time

Individual Presentation & Group Report

Assessment Type 1: Project
Indicative Time on Task 2: 30 hours
Due: Presentation in Class 7-8th November; Report 15th November

This assessment has two parts. Part one involves students being allocated to study groups. Each group will select a current topic to study and discuss. Each group will have up to 45 minutes to lead a class discussion. At least 15 minutes should be devoted to a question and answer period which will be conducted by the group. Part two requires each group to submit a written summary (up to 2,000 words) of their presentation after taking into consideration issues and/or criticisms raised in the class discussion being sure to view the topic through a range of relevant theories.

  • Critically analyse global leadership by diagnosing applied aspects of leadership and motivation in diverse contexts through case studies, both as an individual and a group.

Individual Theoretical Essay

A 2000-word essay on theoretical aspects of leading and motivating is required.

This unit is delivered online and students are required to familiarise themselves with and have access to Zoom technology.
