Unit description Unit description

What is involved in making dance and performance in the 21st century? This unit explores historical and contemporary dance and related performance practices and their relevance to performance making and production in the 21st century. In this studio=based unit you will explore dance and movement techniques through both scholarly and practice-based research, and will gain experience in producing your own performance projects. Prior performing arts experience is not required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: evaluate the socio-cultural scholarship of dance and performance practices.
  • ULO2: apply critical, analytical and integrative thinking in the forms of practical performances, written assignments, and/or oral presentations.
  • ULO3: apply collaborative skills in practical based work.

Research Essay

Assessment Type 1: Essay

Students write a research essay exploring an example of contemporary dance. Refer to iLearn for further information.

Performance project

Assessment Type 1: Performance
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: 3 Nov
Weighting: 35%

 

Students work to produce a solo and a group (with social distancing) performance project in class. Refer to iLearn for further information.

  • evaluate unit themes, creative proposals, and practice-based outcomes.

Delivery and Resources

Delivery:

A weekly seminar will be delivered. See iLearn for further details. 

This unit will commence in Week 1.

Technologies used and required:

This unit has an online presence in iLearn. You will need access to a computer and an internet connection. The unit iLearn page can be accessed at http://ilearn.mq.edu.au 

All relevant MMCC2025 online material will be available via the unit iLearn page. This is your starting point for all information and should be consulted each week so you will be able to keep up to date with all unit online content and catch up with any notifications.

Assessment Submission, Grade and Feedback Delivery:

1. The Research Essay must be submitted via the Turnitin link on the MMCC2025 iLearn page by the relevant date, as indicated above. Feedback and grades for this assessment task will be provided in the convenor's notes in Turnitin.

2. The 2 part Participant Observation report must be submitted via the Turnitin link on the MMCC2025 iLearn page by the relevant dates as indicated above. Feedback will be provided in class, and feedback and grades for this assessment will be provided in Turnitin. 

3. The Performance Project assessment will be assessed by video and observational review by the convenor. Feedback will be provided in class, and feedback and grades for this assessment will be provided in Turnitin.

Late Submissions / Special Consideration

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests
