2021 – Session 2, Special circumstances

Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update

The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.

This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Unit description Unit description

Foreign language education plays an important role in the increasing globalized world. Multilingual ability is thus a valuable skill in personal growth, intercultural communication and in the workforce. This Chinese Advanced-level unit further consolidates and develops students' Chinese language ability in the four areas of study: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The unit further develops students' critical, analytical and independent learning skills, intercultural communication awareness and knowledge of Chinese society and culture. It aims to develop students' language skills towards HSK levels 4-5.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at a more advanced level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.
  • ULO6: Demonstrate the ability to be able to recognize and write about 1200 Chinese characters.

Students should complete all assignments and assessment tasks on time.

All written assignments are required to be submitted via Turnitin.

Late Penalties and Special Consideration

Please note that the University and the Faculty of Arts have launched a new assessment policy effective as of 1 July 2021. This new policy particularly affects LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENTS

The Faculty policy in relation to late assessment submissions is as follows: 

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests, etc. 

To be very clear:

Unless you have applied for special consideration and had your application approved, for each day your assignment is late, 10 marks will be deducted. For example, if you submit your assignment 7 days late, 70 marks will be deducted, which means you will fail that assignment. If your assignment is more than 7 days late (including weekends), you will get 0 for your assignment. These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date. If you find you cannot submit your assignment on time, please apply for Special Consideration through AskMQ. This task assesses the continuous progress of the students. It is conducted online.

Mid-term test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test

Weighting: 23%

 

This task assesses the mastery of the content learned in the first half of the semester. The test includes a listening comprehension component. Student will complete their Mid-Semester Test online.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at a more advanced level.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be able to recognize and write about 1200 Chinese characters.

Oral Role Plays / Presentation

This task assesses the oral language proficiency of the students. It is conducted online for external students.

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at a more advanced level.

Written Assignments

Assessment Type 1: LOTE written composition
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: 11:00 Thursday, 14/10/2021, Week 10
Weighting: 16%

 

This task assesses the written language proficiency of the students, including short essay writing and passages for translation.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Develop comprehensive advanced level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the Chinese language.
  • Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of Chinese-speaking cultures and societies.
  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of Chinese at a more advanced level.
  • Demonstrate a sophisticated awareness of language and language use, in both Chinese and in English.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be able to recognize and write about 1200 Chinese characters.

Final online test

Delivery and Resources

Students are required to attend class either in person or via Zoom. 

Class participation, completing assigned tasks and on-going work over the course of the semester is important.

Integrated Chinese 4th Ed, Vol 3 texbook and workbook will be used throughout semesters 1 (CHIN3010 Chinese Studies 5) and 2 (CHIN3020 Chinese Studies 6).

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.

Please contact your course convenor before the end of Week 1 if you do not have a suitable laptop (or tablet) for in-class use.
