Session 2 Learning and Teaching Update

The decision has been made to conduct study online for the remainder of Session 2 for all units WITHOUT mandatory on-campus learning activities. Exams for Session 2 will also be online where possible to do so.

This is due to the extension of the lockdown orders and to provide certainty around arrangements for the remainder of Session 2. We hope to return to campus beyond Session 2 as soon as it is safe and appropriate to do so.

Some classes/teaching activities cannot be moved online and must be taught on campus. You should already know if you are in one of these classes/teaching activities and your unit convenor will provide you with more information via iLearn. If you want to confirm, see the list of units with mandatory on-campus classes/teaching activities.

Unit description Unit description

This unit considers theories and contemporary personality research within a global, cultural context. It focuses upon the relation between personality and culture, self and identity, and issues surrounding psychopathology and personality disorders. The unit examines the current debates and controversies in personality research by considering the implications of cross-cultural evidence. It also applies a cross-cultural perspective to examining approaches to personality pathology, including understanding dissociative identity disorder, the culture of narcissism, psychopathy, and the Dark Triad/Tetrad. The adaption of personality within cyber-space is also considered. There is a strong emphasis on developing critical thinking skills and appreciating global diversity for understanding personality.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Demonstrate insight into central issues in contemporary personality research within a global context
  • ULO2: Learn of the variety of approaches to the study of personality, and their relevance to understanding psychopathology, everyday life, and research
  • ULO3: Develop and communicate a personal viewpoint on an array of personality psychology issues through writing and peer discussion
  • ULO4: Critically evaluate and synthesise relevant personality literature in a written essay

General Assessment Information

Please note the following: 

1. Late submissions, without an approved extension, will receive a 5% per day penalty including weekends and public holidays. If you submit the assessment task 10 days or more beyond the due date, you will be awarded a maximum of 50% of the overall assessment marks. No further submissions will be accepted after the marked assignments are returned and feedback is released to students. That is, no submissions will be accepted after 5pm September 7th, 2021 for the essay plan and October 20th for the essay.

2. Word count penalty: 5% of the possible mark will be deducted per 100 words over the word limit for the assessment task. An additional 99 words beyond the limit can be written without penalty.

3. All extensions on assessments need to be formally requested via ask.mq.edu.au in line with the special consideration policy.

4. Any requests for remark need to follow the Psychology process and must be applied within 2 weeks of the assessment task being returned. Information will be provided on iLearn.

5. It is Psychology policy that letter grades, not numeric marks, are released for written assessment tasks.

6. The final exam for this unit is currently scheduled to occur online for this unit. Students are expected to make themselves available for the exam, at the date and time set by the University, in line with the Assessment Policy and Procedure.

7. Supplementary assessment tasks will only be provided following an approved Special Consideration application, and only when appropriate. Supplementary assessment tasks, including supplementary exams, can be in a different format to the original assessment task.

8. Sitting the final exam is compulsory in order to be eligible to pass the unit. Any student who does not attempt the final exam will be granted a Fail Absent (FA) grade.

Students submit a plan structuring and developing their argument for their essay.

  • Develop and communicate a personal viewpoint on an array of personality psychology issues through writing and peer discussion

Essay

Assessment Type 1: Essay
Indicative Time on Task 2: 40 hours
Due: Week 8
Weighting: 50%

 

Students submit an essay critically evaluating and developing an argument on a topical issue in personality.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Demonstrate insight into central issues in contemporary personality research within a global context
  • Learn of the variety of approaches to the study of personality, and their relevance to understanding psychopathology, everyday life, and research
  • Develop and communicate a personal viewpoint on an array of personality psychology issues through writing and peer discussion
  • Critically evaluate and synthesise relevant personality literature in a written essay

Final Examination

Final examination held within the University’s formal exam period, in accordance with relevant requirements.

The unit is to be delivered via online lectures and recorded for Echo. Tutorials are to be either face-to-face or online. Resources are available either via iLearn or the Library.

NOTE: there may be necessary adjustments in the delivery of the unit due to COVID (e.g., temporarily offering tutorials online). As such, the teaching delivery is subject to change based on NSW Health and University guidelines.
