Unit description Unit description

This unit is a broad introduction to the performing arts and entertainment industries across local, national and international contexts. It provides an overview of the subsidised and commercial arts sectors, and contributions the arts and performing arts make in social, cultural, and economic contexts. It covers a wide range of forms within the performing arts and entertainment industries. No prior experience of the field is required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: identify a variety of performing arts and entertainment industry sectors within an Australian and international context.
  • ULO2: evaluate and analyse performing arts practices in relation to wider social, cultural and artistic contexts.
  • ULO3: communicate and apply skills in a range of contexts.
  • ULO4: demonstrate skills of academic writing, analysis, description, communication, conceptualisation and reflection.

General Assessment Information

Assessment Submission, Grade and Feedback Delivery: 1. The Participation Task must be submitted via the Turnitin link on the MMCC1035 iLearn page by the relevant date, as indicated above. Feedback and grades for this assessment task will provided in the convenor's notes in Turnitin. 2. The Presentation assessment will be assessed by video and observational review by the convenor. Referencing Style: The referencing style for all written material where academic protocols are required must follow a recognised academic referencing style such as Chicago, Harvard, APA or MLA. If you are unsure of referencing styles please consult the library referencing resources at http://libguides.mq.edu.au/Referencing

Late Submissions / Special Consideration  Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – two (2) marks out of 100 will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted more than seven (7) days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests

Individual engagement with course content in both lectures and tutorials will be demonstrated through writing tasks.

Individual Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Presentation
Indicative Time on Task 2: 50 hours
Due: Week 12 Tutorial
Weighting: 60%

 

Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills of a particular aspect of the performing arts or entertainment sector that reflects their interest. Students will do this through an individual presentation delivered either live to an audience, or, online via a media presentation. Presentations may include PowerPoint presentations, vodcasts, podcasts and performative formats. Refer to iLearn for further information.

Delivery and Resources

Delivery: Lectures will be synchronous online delivery via Zoom. A weekly tutorial will be delivered. See iLearn for further details.   This unit will commence in Week 1.

Technologies used and required: This unit has an online presence in iLearn. You will need access to a computer and an internet connection. The unit iLearn page can be accessed at http://ilearn.mq.edu.au  All relevant MMCC1035 online material will be available via the unit iLearn page. This is your starting point for all information and should be consulted each week so you will be able to keep up to date with all unit online content and catch up with any notifications.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University.
