Unit description
This unit provides the opportunity for students to engage with the legal profession and community through participation in a variety of workplace experiences including, but not limited to, law firms, legal centres, community-based legal organisations and services, government agencies and not-for-profit organisations. The experience may be via clerkship, volunteer work, or internship, and may be undertaken on a weekly or block basis. Students source their own placement, and nominate it for approval by the convenor. Applications for the unit are advertised by the convenor via email. |

Assessment Type 1: Report

Students are required to prepare a final report that outlines the nature of the professional challenges in the legal workplace and the regulatory response to those challenges
Assessment Type 1: Participatory task
Indicative Time on Task 2: 8 hours
Due: From 19 December 2022 to 8 January 2023
Weighting: 30%
Students will participate in online discussion, quizzes and problem solving tasks related to legal practice and regulation
Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 18 December 2022 and 29 January 2023
Weighting: 30%
Students will be required to set goals for their placement and to reflect on how well they have achieved those goals over the course of their placement.

Late Assessment Submission Penalty
Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.
This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc). Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special Consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

The Report assessment will be assessed orally by way of a viva voce conducted on Zoom with the marking team, rather than in written research report style. Students are required to submit a one-page summary or key points and sources by no later than 8 January 2023, and nominate a time out of specific times available to conduct the oral presentation of the report.
