Unit description Unit description

All business decisions have tax implications. Being proficient in tax is essential for Chartered Accountants required to provide accurate professional advice. This unit will advance your technical knowledge of tax, and also develop broader business skills in problem solving, critical thinking, research and evaluation. The unit examines and applies relevant taxation law to various tax entities. Students are required to explain and calculate the taxation consequences applicable to a range of real-life simulated scenarios, including a comprehensive tax reconciliation which integrates the various units.Topics include trading stock, employment remuneration, capital gains tax, tax losses, international tax and tax planning.

Report

Assessment Type 1: Report

The case study will require students to analyse a set of facts concerning a taxpayer's individual circumstances, and then apply Australian tax law to arrive at conclusions and provide appropriate advice to the taxpayer.

  • Apply technical knowledge to a range of transactions and events to determine the tax consequences.

CA - Online Scenario Assessment

Assessment Type 1: Case study/analysis
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 28-31 October 2022
Weighting: 30%

 

Part A

To prepare for the assessment candidates will review scenario information that supports the completion of a tax reconciliation. In the online assessment, candidates will identify, adjust and input approximately 15 numerical items to complete the tax reconciliation and arrive at the final reconciliation sum. They will also identify the legislative references they used to complete the tax reconciliation.

Part B

Candidates will answer questions relating to various transactions and events focusing on different structures. Candidates will be provided with a separate tax reconciliation scenario and must explain the adjustments made or could be required to explain an error.

  • Apply technical knowledge to a range of transactions and events to determine the tax consequences.

CA - Final Exam

Assessment Type 1: Examination
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: 22 November 2022
Weighting: 30%
This is a hurdle assessment task (see assessment policy for more information on hurdle assessment tasks)

 

The examination will consist of three discrete, scenario-based questions in which candidates are required to complete tax calculations, answer short and long questions to apply technical knowledge to determine and respond to taxation consequences relating to a range of tax issues.

Students are expected to sit and pass the CA examination to pass the unit.

CA - Online Quiz

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 10 hours
Due: 14-17 October 2022
Weighting: 10%

 

Tax administration and income tax online assessment activity

In an online quiz, candidates will respond to scenario-based multiple-choice questions concerning tax administration and controls and income tax. Some questions will require candidates to complete tax calculations relating to specific scenarios.

  • Apply on ethical and socially responsible approach to determining taxation consequences.
