Unit description Unit description

Ever wondered how and why as human beings we universally create, listen and move to music? In this unit students are introduced to the universal role of rhythm as a means of measuring and managing time, and then explore how creative musical ideas are applied in practice. Students also create original musical projects, collaborate and perform elements of musical repertoire, and learn to conceptualise and analyse structural features of musical works. This unit encourages students to extend theoretical and practical knowledge of creativity into their own musical practice, including singing and production, or their musical instrument of choice, or into other interdisciplinary creative forms. No prior knowledge of music is required.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

General Assessment Information

Due to the delay in the returning of essay grades and feedback, the submission date of the written component of your final MMCC1045 assessment has been amended to 22 May 2022 (11:59pm). Students who wish to submit their written component before/on the original date, will still be able to do so. The practical component has been delayed until Week 12.

 

Please note that the University and the Faculty of Arts have launched a new assessment policy effective as of 1 July 2021. This new policy particularly affects LATE SUBMISSION OF ASSESSMENTS.

The Faculty policy in relation to late assessment submissions is as follows:

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline. No late submissions will be accepted for timed assessments – e.g. quizzes, online tests, etc.

 

To be very clear:

·       Unless you have applied for special consideration and had your application approved, for each day your assignment is late, 10 marks will be deducted. For example, if you submit your assignment 7 days late, 70 marks will be deducted, which means you will fail that assignment.

·       If your assignment is more than 7 days late (including weekends), you will get 0 marks for your assignment.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date.

Literature Review

Assessment Type 1: Literature review

In preparation for your essay task, you will use the MQ library to find 3 peer-reviewed sources that discuss musical creativity and provide a summary and justification for why this source is relevant. This task is to be referenced in APA referencing style and submitted via Turnitin by the due date.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • reflect on learning and apply academic practices.
  • analyse music texts and practices.

Essay

Assessment Type 1: Essay
Indicative Time on Task 2: 35 hours
Due: 11:59pm on 10/04/2022
Weighting: 35%

 

This task will be written using a formal essay structure and referenced using APA referencing style. A minimum of 4 academic references must be cited in-text and listed at the end of the essay. Sources from the literature review can be cited in this essay if appropriate. The essay is to be submitted via Turnitin by the due date.

  • evaluate and research a musical work that encompasses a range of creative practices.
  • reflect on learning and apply academic practices.

Creative work with written component

Assessment Type 1: Creative work
Indicative Time on Task 2: 40 hours
Due: Written: 11:59pm on 22/05/2022, Prac: Week 12 TBA
Weighting: 50%

 

You will create an original musical work. This work must feature rhythm explicitly in a creative way as a core element of your original work. The written component will detail your project such as your creative process and the justification for your creative choices in relation to unit content. A minimum of 4 academic references, in APA referencing style, is expected for this task.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • identify, analyse and communicate rhythmic structures.
  • communicate musically and creatively.
  • reflect on learning and apply academic practices.
