Unit description Unit description
This unit aims to enable students to become independent users of the French language. It seeks to develop students' skills in reading, writing, comprehension and speaking in French and further develops students' knowledge of contemporary French culture. The work in this unit is of a very intensive nature. The unit aims to develop students' language skills towards B1+ level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL).

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Develop comprehensive intermediate level skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking in the French language.
  • ULO2: Identify, describe and evaluate a broad range of aspects of French-speaking cultures and societies.
  • ULO3: Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of French at an intermediate level.
  • ULO4: Create meaningful intercultural encounters by applying relevant language conventions.
  • ULO5: Demonstrate a refined awareness of language and language use, in both French and in English.

General Assessment Information

Timing and due dates

Quizzes have been scheduled on weekends to accommodate all cohorts. Quizzes will open at 9am on the first day and close at 11.55pm on the second day. It is the students' responsibility to ensure that they are available at the listed dates.

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue.    

This late penalty will apply to non-timed sensitive assessment (incl essays, reports, posters, portfolios, journals, recordings etc)Late submission of time sensitive tasks (such as tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, scheduled practical assessments/labs etc) will only be addressed by the unit convenor in a Special consideration application. Special Consideration outcome may result in a new question or topic.

French Listening Comprehension.

Reading and writing test

Assessment Type 1: Quiz/Test
Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: 15-16/10/22.
Weighting: 20%

 

French reading comprehension and written production.

 


On successful completion you will be able to:

  • Identify, evaluate and deploy a broad range of grammatical structures of French at an intermediate level.

Final written test

Indicative Time on Task 2: 15 hours
Due: 5-6/11/22.
Weighting: 25%

 

Final test covering the entire content of the unit.

Technology

Students are required to have regular access to a computer and the internet. Mobile devices alone are not sufficient.

For students attending classes on campus we strongly encourage that you bring along your own laptop computer, ready to work with activities in your online unit. The preferred operating system is Windows 10.

Students are required to access the online unit in iLearn by the end of Week 1 and follow any relevant instructions and links for downloads that may be required. If applicable, students are required to download the relevant language package prior to Week 2.
