Unit description Unit description

This unit aims to develop the skills of history students in order to support advanced study of the Latin language. It continues the systematic analysis of grammar from previous units and explores the concepts of historical development and diversity in the classical and medieval periods. The unit also aims to help students develop their skills in reading original Latin literary and documentary texts, and analyse the significance of Latin for the study of relevant ancient cultures.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Identify and recall Latin grammatical structures at advanced level
  • ULO2: recognise and memorise advanced Latin vocabulary
  • ULO3: assess the grammar required for the translation of Latin texts appropriate to level of study
  • ULO4: explore and appraise relevant grammatical and lexical reference tools
  • ULO5: integrate knowledge of grammar and vocabulary in reading and writing advanced Latin texts

General Assessment Information

The unit has Four Assessment Tasks:

1. Four translation exercises from English to Latin due in Weeks 3, 6, 9, and 11. Weighting 35% (split as 10% for the first three and 5% for the last exercise).

2. Three participations exercises due in Weeks 4, 8, and 12. Weigting 15% (that is 5% each)

3. Two comprehension tests due in Weeks 5 and 10. Weighting 15% (split as 8% for the first one and 7% for the second)

4. 1 online, non-invigilated exam due in Week 13. Weighting 35%

Submission

All submissions will be done via Turnitin and the ilearn website. 

The tasks dropbox will open on the Monday of the week your assessment is due and will close on 23:59pm on the Sunday of the said week. Students are asked to submit their work any time during the week. 

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, (a) a penalty for lateness will apply – 10 marks out of 100 credit will be deducted per day for assignments submitted after the due date – and (b) no assignment will be accepted seven days (incl. weekends) after the original submission deadline.
