Unit description Unit description

This unit examines the relationships between contemporary ethical and sustainability issues and dilemmas faced by managers in corporate, not-for-profit or government sectors. By the end of the unit, students will have a strong appreciation of how individuals and organisations can potentially contribute to society and the business environment. This unit encourages students’ innovation and creativity in business planning that leads to a sustainable future.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Explain and apply key terms, concepts, frameworks and theories relevant to ethics and sustainability in business.
  • ULO2: Assess ethical and sustainability factors into business decision-making and management practice.
  • ULO3: Evaluate the impact of responsible leadership on business sustainable development and approaches.
  • ULO4: Formulate collaborative business solutions that address ethical and environmental issue(s) and drive sustainable outcomes for society.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty (written assessments) 

 Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a grade of ‘0’ will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical concern.  

For any late submissions of time-sensitive tasks, such as scheduled tests/exams, performance assessments/presentations, and/or scheduled practical assessments/labs, students need to apply for Special Consideration.

Essay

Assessment Type 1: Project
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 7
Weighting: 30%

This project consists of an essay of up to 1500 words.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Explain and apply key terms, concepts, frameworks and theories relevant to ethics and sustainability in business.
  • Evaluate the impact of responsible leadership on business sustainable development and approaches.
  • Formulate collaborative business solutions that address ethical and environmental issue(s) and drive sustainable outcomes for society.

Group Project and Presentation

Assessment Type 1: Project
Indicative Time on Task 2: 40 hours
Due: Week 9
Weighting: 40%

A Group submisison of up to 2,000 words, and an individual presentation.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Explain and apply key terms, concepts, frameworks and theories relevant to ethics and sustainability in business.
  • Assess ethical and sustainability factors into business decision-making and management practice.
  • Evaluate the impact of responsible leadership on business sustainable development and approaches.

Reflective Writing

Assessment Type 1: Reflective Writing
Indicative Time on Task 2: 20 hours
Due: Week 13
Weighting: 30%

An approximately 1500 word reflective submission.


On successful completion you will be able to:
  • Formulate collaborative business solutions that address ethical and environmental issue(s) and drive sustainable outcomes for society.

Delivery and Resources

One hour lecture (recorded online) and two hour tutorial/workshop (face to face or online) each week. 

There is no textbook. Various academic and/or practitioner journal readings will be assigned each week to assist with learning.

Results published on platform other than eStudent, (eg. iLearn, Coursera etc.) or released directly by your Unit Convenor, are not confirmed as they are subject to final approval by the University.
