Unit description Unit description

This unit is intended to develop foundational knowledge and skills in the field of creative industries and is designed for students from a range of backgrounds and skill levels. The unit introduces students to key theories and contemporary debates that animate the study of the creative industries. We pose questions about the history of technological change, and the promises and risks related to new technologies. In class discussions, key texts, multimedia, and lecture content, students have the opportunity to engage with leading-edge topics. Students will develop capacities to analyse and critically assess how technologies are shaped and how they shape us. Additionally, students will undertake self-directed research involving creative digital media production. The unit provides a critical foundation for students pursuing postgraduate research in the creative industries with an emphasis on innovative forms and practices.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty

Unless a Special Consideration request has been submitted and approved, a 5% penalty (of the total possible mark) will be applied each day a written assessment is not submitted, up until the 7th day (including weekends). After the 7th day, a mark of ‘0’ (zero) will be awarded even if the assessment is submitted. Submission time for all written assessments is set at 11.55pm. A 1-hour grace period is provided to students who experience a technical issue. This late penalty will apply to MMCC6020’s two written assignments.

These are serious penalties that will substantially alter your final grade and even determine whether you pass or fail this unit. Please make every effort to submit your assignment by the due date. If you find you cannot submit your assignment on time, please apply for Special Consideration through AskMQ. Make sure you read Macquarie University's policy regarding Special Consideration requests before you apply:

https://students.mq.edu.au/study/assessment-exams/special-consideration

Attendance and Participation:

Students are likewise expected to attend all seminar classes for MMCC6020. Seminar classes are not optional: they deliver important content and are a central component of meeting the learning outcomes in this unit. They provide an environment where students can discuss ideas and learn from each other, building important networks and group work skills. In class, you will also have the opportunity to ask for assistance from your tutor, and receive informal feedback on work in progress. Students who do not attend classes will miss out on important unit content and learning activities, and do so at their own risk.

Independent Work:

MMCC6020 students will need to do their own reading of relevant texts or online materials outside class time.

*Assessment standard in this unit align with the University's grade descriptors, available at: https://staff.mq.edu.au/work/strategy-planning-and-governance/university-policies-and-procedures/policies/assessment
