Unit description Unit description

This unit examines the macro view of international business, examining the underlying causes and benefits of trade and foreign direct investment flows between nations. The driving forces behind globalisation are examined, as are the costs and benefits to nations, industries and individuals flowing from the globalised economy. The firm-level aspects of international business are also considered to provide students with an understanding of some of the key issues faced by managers engaged in international business operations. We explore the development of international strategies appropriate for different business environments and the most commonly utilised forms of foreign market-entry modes, together with their implications for managers.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:

  • ULO1: Investigate and explain contemporary theories and research on managing globally.
  • ULO2: Evaluate the major influences on firms that participate in international markets.
  • ULO3: Analyse the complexity, managerial challenges and opportunities of the global business environment, including in the context of sustainability concerns.

General Assessment Information

Late Assessment Submission Penalty  (written assessments)  

 If you submit your assessment late, 5% of the total possible marks will be deducted for each day (including weekends), up to 7 days. Submissions more than 7 days late will receive a mark of 0. 

Example 1 (out of 100): If you score 85/100 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 5 marks and receive 80/100. 

Example 2 (out of 30): If you score 27/30 but submit 20 hours late, you will lose 1.5 marks and receive 25.5/30. 

 

Extensions:  

Automatic short extension: Some assessments are eligible for automatic short extension. You can only apply for an automatic short extension before the due date.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to research, analyse, and apply management and international business theories to organisational contexts, and to communicate findings and recommendations in a professional and evidence-based way.
 
You will conduct a structured analysis using theoretical and empirical evidence to address a contemporary organisational challenge. Your submission will demonstrate critical reasoning, research integration, and clear, professional communication aligned with business standards.

The purpose of this assessment is to develop your ability to research, analyse, and communicate insights about an organisation’s international operations, using theoretical frameworks and practical evidence.
 
You will work collaboratively to select an organisation with significant international operations and examine its global strategy, development, and future challenges. Your analysis will integrate course concepts with additional research and demonstrate applied understanding of international business dynamics.
