On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to:
The Fitness to Practice (FTP) Procedure applies to all students enrolled in Practical, Clinical and Professional (PCP) programs or units. It establishes how the University will identify and manage FTP at admission and during candidature, including supporting students enrolled in these programs or units.
The FTP Procedure is governed by General Coursework Rules 9.7, 9.8, and the Academic Progression Policy and is supported by the Inherent Requirements Framework.
The FTP procedure applies to PCP programs, which have embedded practical or clinical placement requirements in order to fulfil registration requirements.
Student
A student who has not met the FTP requirements for a PCP program listed in Schedule 3 of the Academic Progression Policy will be permanently excluded from their program of study.
An excluded student may apply for entry as a new applicant for a different program for which they meet the entry requirements and may apply either directly through MQ or through UAC. Refer to Coursefinder for specific admission requirements.
An excluded student may have additional conditions for admission after the exclusion period and will need to refer to the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy and Procedure.
A student who has been found guilty of misconduct by the University Discipline Committee according to the Student Discipline Rules 2018 Schedule 2 (Sanctions) may have a sanction applied, which may include suspending the student for an indefinite or a specified period or terminating the student’s admission or enrolment at the University.
Guidance for this procedure is provided in the Fitness to Practice Flowchart and the Faculties Fitness to Practice Guidelines.
Criteria to meet Fitness to Practice requirements
Although program specific requirements may vary according to the external regulatory or registration requirements, five core criteria are identified below. It is recommended that program specific requirements be defined using these criteria.
Interns completing CHIR897 in Session Two 2018 must have met all CLINIC requirements, and have all paperwork (except patient handovers) completed and signed by no later than the 25th of November 2018 in order to receive their grade when exam results are released by the University. This includes a minimum of 300 patient visits.
Clinic Internship I and II: CHIR896 and CHIR897 will be awarded satisfactory/fail grades only. A Pass/Satisfactory grade may only be awarded when ALL Clinical Requirements are met. This includes a minimum aggregate raw mark of 70% from the assessments and satisfactory attendance, including the attainment of the minimum required patient treatments.
A grade of INCOMPLETE (I) may be awarded if all requirements EXCEPT Patient Numbers and/or Patient X-ray numbers are met by the end of the examination period. No INCOMPLETE Grades will be awarded for any other non-completions.
A FAIL of the unit will be recommended if ANY of the Clinical requirements are not met by the end of the examination period or a minimum raw mark of 70 across all assessments is not met. A FAIL of the subject will be recommended if ANY incomplete component of the assessment is not resolved by 1st July, 2018 for the D1 offering of this unit and 31st January, 2019 for D2 offering of this unit.
